People living abroad (as well as in the UK) often need someone trustworthy to look after their affairs. Sometimes it would not be appropriate, or even possible, to appoint members of the family. This can also be the case for people who simply prefer a non-family member to manage their affairs. Typically, but not always, this will include people in later life or those living in retirement.
