Transport

Transport and logistic issues directly affect our daily personal and business lives, the environment and the economy.  Such matters are often emotive as well as high profile and politically sensitive.

There is a great deal of activity at present at both policy and strategic levels.

The EU Commission's mid-term review of the 2001 White Paper on transport policy is ongoing.  In the meantime, the TEN-T trans-european transport corridors projects are being developed.  Work on the "New Opera" European rail freight network project is also ongoing.  In the meantime, a new round of "Marco Polo" project funding has been announced by the EU Commission to encourage modal shift to short-sea shipping, rail and inland waterways.

In the UK, the port policy review is underway whilst the Eddrington Report on the long term transport strategy is due to be published in the near future.  This will doubtless make interesting reading alongside the recent Stern Report on the environment.

In Scotland, the National Transport Strategy is under development as are the strategies of the new regional transport partnerships and the local authorities.  A separate Freight Action Plan is also in development.  A National Strategic Projects Review is being undertaken by Transport Scotland to inform decisions on the shape of Scotland's transport network from 2012 onwards.
