Charities & Voluntary Organisations
The diversity of charities and voluntary organisations is a key characteristic of the sector in Scotland. The size, organisation, funding and purpose of these organisations varies enormously. The scope of services provided by these organisations includes: social work / social welfare services; economic and community development; campaigning and advocacy.
The SCVO estimates that there are over 44,000 voluntary organisations in Scotland alone. There are 28,000 charities (21,000 of which are also charitable organisations) and it is estimated that 100,000 people work in this sector. The voluntary sector is also the fastest growing sector of the UK economy.
