David joined the firm as an Assistant in 1975, becoming a Partner in 1977, Head of Corporate in 1997 and Chairman and Senior Partner in 2001. From the outset David specialised in corporate work, and advises a number of clients on their corporate finance and commercial activities. He has been extensively involved in the electricity and gas industries, particularly their longer term commercial contracts and as a result, their PPP and PFI projects in Scotland and England.
Much of David’s energy and project work over the last fifteen years has involved taking new concepts such as the establishment of private electricity and gas, supply and distribution companies and the creation of a practical contractual framework within which they and their customers can operate.
Examples in the public domain include the establishment of the first Scottish Renewables Obligation in 1993, the first energy services PFI project for the NHS in England and Wales in 1995, and the first conversion of a UK onshore gas field into a gas storage facility in 1999.
David is the Chairman of the Scottish Chambers of Commerce, having been the President of the Glasgow Chamber in 2001. He is a former Chairman of the Euro-American Lawyers Group, (a group of some twenty plus European and American law firms), is a Director of the Scottish Council for Development and Industry, a Member of the Court of the University of Glasgow and the company secretary of Loganair Limited.
David has spoken on a wide range of corporate and commercial topics and to a number of different audiences.
Professional issues on which he has spoken include contract negotiation, energy services in the PFI world and directors liabilities and responsibilities. Audiences have ranged from lawyers, including seminars for in-house counsel, other professionals such as chartered accountants, and broadly based commercial audiences.
In addition, David has spoken not only in the UK but also in other parts of Europe and the USA on a wide variety of more broadly based commercial and economic topics in his capacities as Chairman of the Scottish Chambers of Commerce and Chairman of the Euro-American Lawyers Group.
Independent research for Chambers UK 2004 commented that "you can totally rely on" David Ross. He is the firm's chief executive but "is still very hands-on."
