Colin heads up the IP and Technology Group. He is recognised as a specialist in both intellectual property law and competition law and has received acknowledgements in Chambers as a specialist in EU competition law who "knows what he's about". Colin is accredited by the Law Society of Scotland as a specialist in intellectual property and also sits on the Law Society Committee on intellectual property.
Colin advises on all aspects of intellectual property law including registrability of trade marks; branding; patents; protection of know how; database rights and design rights. Colin spends a lot of his time drafting and negotiating licences of intellectual property, particularly for patents, know how and trade marks. He acts for a number of spin out companies and this has involved negotiating a transfer of technology from the relevant University.
Colin advises on IT and computer contracts and acts for a number of companies in the telecom sector including Hay Systems; Argyll Telecom, the Mobile Business Alliance and Thus plc.
Colin acquired his expertise in EU competition law whilst working in two major city firms in London. Colin advises on all aspects of EU and UK competition law including cartel investigations by the Office of Fair Trading under the Competition Act.
Colin also advises on mergers/acquisitions which require clearance from the Office of Fair Trading and on EU public procurement law. Examples of experience in EU public procurement include advising on major projects for the Highland Council, South Ayrshire Council and Fife Council.
Independent research for Chambers 2009 commented that Colin is known for his “brilliant work with start-ups and entrepreneurs.” Legal 500 comments that the ‘particularly energetic and empathetic Colin Miller, never seems to lose sight of the fact that clients have to make a business decision at the end of the day’.
Furthermore, Colin elicited high praise from clients for his "superb public procurement expertise and responsive style".
