LEGAL TRAINEESHIPS

Biggart Baillie regards the training and development of all of our people as vital to our continued future success. Our staff are encouraged to contribute to this by taking an active role in their own personal development and this is reflected in the structure of our legal traineeship.

Our Recruitment Process
We recruit our trainees two years in advance of their actual contract start date.  During that time, we keep in touch and agree a structure much nearer to the actual date of joining. Whilst all firms follow the Law Society guidelines, we put special emphasis on the need for a well-structured and focused programme.

Trainees have the opportunity to indicate which of our departments they would prefer to spend time in:  Commercial Property, Corporate, Dispute Management, Infrastructure, Environment & Transport and Private Client.   However, the final structure will reflect the needs of the firm and the individual.

How it Works
At the start of your traineeship, you will be introduced to a ‘Biggart Baillie Buddy’ who is a second year trainee that will help you settle in and adjust to office life in the first few weeks.  You will also be placed with a mentoring solicitor within each department that you work.  The mentor will be your initial point of contact for all work related queries and will be the person who will review your development, liaise with other fee earners in the department and conduct your Quarterly Trainee Performance Reviews.

There is an induction programme that incorporates training in office procedures, cash room entries, IT and time recording and a tailored seminar programme. In addition, each department has an open fee-earner seminar programme that all trainees are encouraged to attend.  We hold informal and relaxed progress reviews after one month and then follow the trainee review process with quarterly reviews at the end of each 13-week period.

SUMMER PLACEMENTS

Biggart Baillie run an annual summer placement programme.  The aim of this program is to allow law students to experience the working environment of a law firm before embarking on the traineeship process.  Applications for a summer placement are invited from law students in their third year of a four year LLB, or in their first year of a fast track postgraduate LLB.

The placement will last for a period of four weeks.  Students will have the opportunity to spend two weeks in two of our five main departments: Commercial Property, Corporate, Dispute Management, Private Client and Infrastructure, Environment and Transport.  Summer placements can be based in either our Glasgow or Edinburgh offices.

Previous students have said that it was an enjoyable experience as well as an excellent opportunity to see what life is really like as a legal trainee.  The summer placement programme is about getting real hands on experience and not about doing all the photocopying and administration. Summer students get a real idea of what life will be like as a trainee at Biggart Baillie.
